On the Move with Sarıkeçili Nomads – Day 1

Apr 16, 2019 | In the Field, Photo Stories

Yolda Initiative is on the move for the Spring Migration. Follow them during this long spring to see how mobile pastoralists in Turkey live in harmony with nature by migrating between summering and wintering sites according to seasonal availability – as they have been doing for thousands of years.

This spring will be a long one. Yolda will accompany the Bacak family (Sarıkeçili pastoral nomads) during their hundreds of kilometer long migration from their wintering site on the shores of Mediterranean to their summering sites in Central Anatolia, beyond the Taurus Mountains. As the family climb, the vegetation transforms with the coming spring, and the Bacak family – like all mobile pastoralists – follow a wave of blooming flowers every day for a month. Through these posts Yolda will share insights not only into how mobile pastoralists conserve and enrich their surrounding nature, how they contribute to local economies, produce high quality and healthy food, and join the fight against climate change – but also the joys, freedoms and challenges they encounter in their daily lives.

Yolda Initiative is a nature conservation NGO based in Turkey and operating at international level. Yolda works for the conservation of biodiversity through research, advocacy, communications and partnerships. Recognizing that humans, with their cultural diversity, are an integral component of ecosystems, traditional cultural practises that benefits biodiversity are a particular focus of Yolda.
